About this course

Vidyuis a free, self-paced course that teaches how electricity is made, moved and paid for — starting from absolutely nothing and going, if you want, all the way to the engineering.

It is written first for school students in India (roughly classes 8–12), and for any curious adult second. The examples are Indian — Bhadla's solar fields, Kudankulam's reactors, the DISCOM in your city, the great blackout of July 2012 — but the physics works everywhere.

How the tiers work

Every lesson is layered. Thebase tieris always visible and assumes zero prior knowledge. When you see a🔥 Advancedblock, that's optional conceptual depth — open it if you're curious, skip it freely. A🔥🔥 Deepblock goes further still, into real derivations and engineering numbers. Nothing in a later module ever secretly depends on a 🔥 block: skipping them never breaks the story.

The depth button in the site header opens those blocks for you. It cycles through three settings — base only, then 🔥 open, then 🔥 and 🔥🔥 both open — applies to every block on the page at once, and remembers your choice as you move between lessons. It needs JavaScript; without it the button stays hidden and you open each block yourself, which works just as well.

Progress & privacy

Every lesson on this site is free to read without an account. There is no advertising and no tracking.

If you want your progress to follow you between your phone and a computer, you cancreate an account. We ask for four things: your name, your email address, your date of birth, and a password you choose. Your completed modules and quiz scores then sync to your account.

Here is what each one is actually for. Youremail addressandpasswordsign you in. The address is also where account email goes — a confirmation link when you sign up, and a password-reset link if you ask for one. Never a newsletter, and nothing else. Yournamegreets you by its first word in the site header, and — worth knowing before you type it — it is the name printed on your certificate if you sit and pass the final exam, so use the name you would want to see there. Yourdate of birthis used to work out whether you are under 18, and your account stores that answer as a plain yes/no next to the date. Neither the date nor the flag is shown to other learners, and neither is used to personalise anything.

Nothing is shared, sold, or given to advertisers, and there is no analytics script of any kind on this site.

Without an account, everything still works: your progress is saved in your own browser and shown on the progress page. If you are not signed in, that page has a button to clear the progress kept in this browser, and it asks you to confirm before it deletes anything. If you are signed in, the same page can delete your account outright — progress, exam result and certificate together — because that choice should be yours and not a request you have to send someone. There is no "reset progress" button short of that: finishing the modules is what unlocks the final exam.

Progress kept in the browser alone is not permanent, though, and it is worth being clear about the difference: clearing your browsing data clears it too, and it does not follow you to another phone or computer. Only a signed-in account keeps it safely, which is the whole reason accounts exist here.
